Kangaroos (genus: Macropus) typically live in groups called “troops” throughout Eastern Australia. A unique feature of kangaroos, is that after giving birth to a baby kangaroo, called a “joey,” the mom keeps the baby safe in a pouch on her abdomen. This pouch is essentially a flap of skin that allows them to cradle the joey. The baby can stay in this pouch for hundreds of days after birth!
