
Nudibranch translates to “naked gills”. For dorid nudibranchs like this Mexichromis
mariei, their gills are in the shape of a pompom on their backs, whereas other
clades of nudibranchs have gills called cerata that look like shag carpets on the sea
slugʼs back.
